In The Unridden Tongue, Tokn takes one of the most enduring archetypes of freedom and places him in a state of enforced restraint. The cowboy, so often imagined as untamed, self-governing, and beyond instruction, appears here immobilised at the point of expression. His gaze remains unwavering, almost accusatory, while the mouth is sealed with actual duct tape, turning silence from metaphor into material fact.

Rendered in Tokn’s signature high-contrast visual language, the portrait is stripped down to presence, tension, and command. The vast black field that surrounds the figure does not read as emptiness, but as psychic terrain — an expanse of pressure, memory, and withheld speech. Within that darkness, the duct tape becomes the work’s brutal centre: ordinary, industrial, and deeply disruptive against the mythic severity of the face.

The title itself is quietly loaded. The Unridden Tongue suggests a voice never allowed to break into full force, a will interrupted before it can declare itself. Yet the painting does not surrender to helplessness. Instead, Tokn offers a more complex form of power – one in which dignity survives obstruction, and resistance remains alive in the refusal of the eyes to yield.
